CHROMIUM

DESCRIPTION

Chromium is a mineral that is essential for human health. It is an essential cofactor for the hormone insulin, which regulates the metabolism of protein, fats and carbohydrates.  Chromium is particularly involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates.  Because of this, it can be a deterrent to the onset of diabetes. Chromium also helps maintain an appropriate blood pressure. Individuals tend to retain less chromium as they age.

Deficiency symptoms

Deficiency symptoms include high blood sugar and/or cholesterol levels, and poor tolerance of glucose.

those Who may need to supplement

•     people predisposed to diabetes

•     people needing to lower total cholesterol levels and increase HDL levels

•     athletes wanting to develop lean muscle

REQUIREd Nutritional intake

The National Research Council has tentatively recommended 50 to 200 mcg of chromium as an “adequate” daily amount. The Food and Drug Administration has proposed 130 mcg as its Reference Daily Intake. Nutritional researchers find that doses of 200 to 400 mcg produce significant health benefits. There is no specific required nutritional intake value for chromium as given by the COMA report, but a daily amount in excess of 25 mcg is thought to be adequate and safe.
