MAGNESIUM

DESCRIPTION

Magnesium is one of the most abundant minerals in the human body, following calcium and phosphorus. Half of the body’s magnesium is found in bones, the rest is in the body’s other tissues. Magnesium is necessary for proper muscle and nerve function, energy release, growth (e.g. reproduction of DNA), and to maintain healthy cells and tissues.  Magnesium is also needed for proper endocrine (hormonal) function.  It may also have a protective effect on the heart.

DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMS

Inadequate magnesium may adversely affect many functions of the body.  Symptoms of magnesium deficiency include irritability, tension and stress, muscle tremors and cramps, parethesias (“pins and needles”), and arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat). A deficiency of magnesium may be related to a shortage of potassium.
